Long Overdue

Pääsin kotiin perjantaina ja kiirettä on pitänyt vähän joka rintamalla. Raportti Portlandin lankakaupoista myöhemmin.

I made it home safely on Friday and been very busy both at home and work. I will tell you all about my trip very soon, though.

Matkani aikana oli postilaatikkoon tupsahtanut ihana paketti SNY:ltä. Kolme vyyhtiä aivan mielettömän ihanaa Atacama-alpakkaa (käytiinköhän me samoilla messuilla, kun siellä tuota lankaa ihailin?), toista alpakkaa, kahvia ja kerroslaskuri. Piti jo viikonlopun aikana laittaa kuva tänne, mutta kamera oli kummasti kadoksissa. Myöhästyneet kiitokset siis! Olet ihana!

While I was gone, the mailman delivered the most wonderful package from my Finnish secret pal. I love the tones of the Atacama alpaca! And (s)he sent three skeins of it! My pal also included a ball of Schachenmayr alpaca, coffee and row counter. I meant to post pictures during the weekend, but could not find my camera anywhere. Thank you my pal, you are the greatest!

Greetings from Portland!

Pikaiset kuulumiset sateisesta Oregonista. Lahdin aikaisin lauantaiaamuna matkaan, tarkoituksena oli lentaa Frankfurtin kautta suoraan matkakohteeseeni. Matka vaihtuikin piiitkaan reittiin Helsinki-Zurich-Chicago-Portland, 28.5 tuntia, ja laukutkin jaivat Sveitsiin.

A quick note from rainy Portland, OR. I left home early Saturday morning, with the intention of flying to Frankfurt, Germany, and then directly to Portland. Little did I know that it would take me 28.5 hours to get to my destination... I was rerouted to Zurich, Switzerland, then Chicago and finally I made it to Portland. The luggage was left behind in Switzerland.

Nyt ovat laukutkin saapuneet ja elama hymyilee. Konferenssi on loistava ja shoppailumahdollisuudet hyvat. Kotiin lahden torstaina, Denverin ja Frankfurtin kautta. Toivottavasti paluumatka sujuu jouhevasti.

The luggage is finally here and life is good. The conference is very useful and I love the fact that Oregon collects no sales tax. I am flying home on Thursday, this time through Denver and Frankfurt. Let's hope I'll have better luck with my flights then.

Poitsu näki Morehouse Farmin alligaattorihuivin mainoksen ja ihastui. Halusi ja tarvitsi, vaati ja pyysi. Tiedättehän kaksivuotiaat.

My son saw a picture of the alligator scarf by Morehouse Farm. He wanted and needed it, demanded and pegged. You know how two-year-olds are.

Minä tutkin hintoja ja kauhistuin. Pelkkää ohjetta ei ollut saatavilla, vaan pitäisi ostaa tarvikepaketti. Paketin hinta on $16.50, siihen päälle toimituskulut $4.95 ja vielä $15 lisää siitä riemusta, että paketti kulkeutuisi ison lätäkön yli. Auts, melkein 40 dollaria lapsen huivista.

I took a look at the prices and was shocked. The scarf is only available as a kit. The kit price is $16.50 and shipping $4.95. Add to that the surchage for shipping to a foreign country, $15, and it totals almost $40. Way too much.

Niinpä päätin häpeämättömästi kopioida.

So I ended up, shamelessly, making my own version.

Niilo tykkää! Sain huivin valmiiksi illalla ja aamulla se sitten odotteli sohvalla kun poika heräsi. Hän juoksi sohvan luokse, silitti huivia ja sanoi "Tää on ihana". Suloinen poika!

Niilo likes it! I finished the scarf late at night and left it waiting on the couch. When he woke up in the morning, he ran to the couch, touched the scarf and said "It's lovely". What a sweet boy!

Nypyt tehdään lisäämällä silmukoita vähitellen usean kerroksen ajan ja sitten kaventamalla kaikki kerralla pois.

Krokotiilin vartalossa on 22 silmukkaa ja nyppyjä rinnakkain neljä. Nyppyjen välissä on neljä silmukkaa, reunassa kolme. Kroko on aina oikein -neuletta.

Tässä ohje yhteen nyppyyn. Nyppy aloitetaan yhdellä silmukalla.

1. krs: Neulo silmukka etu- ja takareunastaan. Yhteensä kaksi silmukkaa.
2. krs: Neulo kumpikin silmukka etu- ja takareunastaan. Yhteensä neljä silmukkaa.
3. krs: Neulo ensimmäinen silmukka etu- ja takareunastaan, 2 s. oikein, neulo viimeinen silmukka etu- ja takareunastaan. Yhteensä 6 silmukkaa.
4. krs: Neulo ensimmäinen silmukka etu- ja takareunastaan, 1 s. oikein, neulo seuraavat kaksi silmukkaa etu- ja takareunoistaan, 1 s. oikein, neulo viimeinen silmukka etu- ja takareunastaan. Yhteensä 10 silmukkaa.
5. krs: Neulo ensimmäinen silmukka etu- ja takareunastaan, 8 s. oikein, neulo viimeinen silmukka etu- ja takareunastaan. Yhteensä 12 silmukkaa.
6. krs: Neulo ensimmäinen silmukka etu- ja takareunastaan, 10 s. oikein, neulo viimeinen silmukka etu- ja takareunastaan. Yhteensä 14 silmukkaa.
7. krs: Neulo 14 s. oikein yhteen. Tässä käytin apuna ryijykoukkua.

Kavennuskerroksen jälkeen neulo 7 krs. ja aloita sitten uusi nyppyrivi.

The bumps are made by increasing stitches gradually over several rows and then decreasing all at once.

The body of the crocodile is knitted with 22 stitches and there are four bumps in a row. Four stitches between the bumps, three selvage stitches.

The crocodile is knitted with garter stitch.

Here are the instructions for one bump. Start with one stitch.

Row 1: Knit through the front and back of the stitch. 2 stitches.
Row 2: Knit through the front and back of both the stitches. 4 stitches.
Row 3: Knit through the front and back of the first stitch, knit 2 stitches, knit through the front and back of the last stitch. 6 stitches.
Row 4: Knit through the front and back of the first stitch, knit 1 stitch, knit through the front and back of next 2 stitches, knit 1 stitch, knit through the front and back of the last stitch. 10 stitches.
Row 5: Knit through the front and back of the first stitch, knit 8 stitches, knit through the front and back of the last stitch. 12 stitches.
Row 6: Knit through the front and back of the first stitch, knit 10 stitches, knit through the front and back of the last stitch. 14 stitches.
Row 7: Knit 14 stitches together. I used a latch hook to do this.

After the decrease row, knit 7 rows and start a new bump row.

Ompelin myös kuumavesipullolle päällyksen ja kirjoin sen. Ohje Tone Finnangerin kirjasta Sew Pretty Homestyle. Tekstin vaihdoin suomenkieliseksi.

I also sewed a cover for a hot water bottle and embroidered it. The pattern is from Sew Pretty Homestyle by Tone Finnanger. It says "Sweet dreams" in Finnish.

Olen edelleen täällä, mutta oikea elämä on taas vienyt voiton harrastuksista. Tällä viikolla hymyilin miehen työnantajan coctail-tilaisuudessa, järjestin yhdistyksemme paikallistapaamisen ja tein sen sata muuta juttua.

Yes, I am still here. Real life has overriden crafts lately. This week so far: smiled at DH's employer's coctail party, organized our society's local meeting and about hundred other things.
