Baby Gifts

Sain muutama viikko sitten ilouutisia: graduohjaajalleni oli syntynyt pieni tyttö. Ja eikun puikot heilumaan!

I heard some great news a couple of weeks ago: my MA thesis supervisor had given birth to a baby girl! Naturally, I had to start something right away.

Ensin myssy. Pienille tytöille on ihanaa tehdä pieniä myssyjä.

First the hat. I love knitting bonnets for little girls. I found some supersoft organic merino in my stash, purchased at Kestovaippakauppa. The pattern was easy to decide: the Marshmallow Bonnet in Itty-Bitty Hats. I love the vintage style of the bonnet and have been waiting for somebody to have a baby girl so that I could knit it.

Marshmallow Bonnet

And then the booties. I ran into this pattern in Ravelry a couple of weeks ago and got to try it out now. Very cute! I wanted something that would fit an infant, so I made them 10 stitches smaller. The yarn that I used (Drops Alpaca) is somewhat too fine for the booties and they turned out sock-like, but I wanted them as soft and cuddly as possible so I stuck with the yarn.

Merry-Janes

Choosing the color was difficult once again. I did not want to go for the obvious pink, so I chose light green. I hope the new mama likes it. Photographing the knits was a little difficult as the bonnet was way too small for my son and way too big for my cat. An old doll graciously agreed to pose with them.

Merry-Janes

SP12 Questionnaire

Tulihan sitä sadetta vihdoin. Ukkonen paukutti yöllä oikein kunnolla ja vettä tuli solkenaan. Nurmikko kiittää! Onneksi vettä on luvassa lisää tällä viikolla, vastaistutettujen puiden ja siirtonurmikon kastelu käy jo työstä.

Nature's wonders

We finally got some much-needed rain last night. Thunderstorm woke me up in the middle of the night and it was pouring. We have not had any rain for weeks so it was nice. We are supposed to be getting some more rain this week, I am really looking forward to it.

Nature's wonders

----

Here is the SP121 Questionnaire:

1. What is/are your favorite yarn/s to knit with? What fibers do you absolutely *not* like?

I love natural fibers: wool, silk, and alpaca are my favorites. Blends are fine, as long as the synthetic content is not too high. Synthetic fibers make me itchy and uncomfortable. I'm also not too keen on novelty yarns.

2. What do you use to store your needles/hooks in?
I have a roll-up needle case that my sister made me. I also have an old tool box that I use to store everything that does not fit in the roll-up case.

3. How long have you been knitting & how did you learn? Would you consider your skill level to be beginner, intermediate or advanced?
I learned to knit a thousand years ago, when I was about 5 years old. My mom taught me and I have been knitting ever since. I would say I'm advanced in many things, but then cannot seem to master some things. For example, stranded colorwork is still not my cup of tea.

4. Do you have an Amazon or other online wish list?
I have a wish list at amazon.co.uk

5. What's your favorite scent?
I tend to get a headache from heavy scents. I love the scent of newly-cut grass. I wish that could be stored in a bottle for the long winter days!

6. Do you have a sweet tooth? Favorite candy?
I do have a sweet tooth, but try not to give in to it too often. I mostly long for candy that I cannot get here in Finland: salt water taffy and Reese's peanut butter cups.

7. What other crafts or Do-It-Yourself things do you like to do? Do you spin?
I love cross stitching and sewing, but have not had too much time to do them lately. I also crochet and do bobbin lace from time to time. I would love to learn how to spin, and even have a spinning wheel, but haven't had the time to try it out yet.

8. What kind of music do you like? Can your computer/stereo play MP3s? (if your buddy wants to make you a CD)
I love a variety of music. I listen to everything from heavy metal to country and bluegrass. I have an MP3 player and my computer also plays MP3s.

9. What's your favorite color(s)? Any colors you just can't stand?
I love warm earth tones (faves brown, green, orange). I dislike purple and lilac. I do not like variegated yarns with a strong color contrast. I do like self-striping yarns, though. Solid or semi-solid is always the safest choice. (I sound awfully picky now, sorry...)

10. What is your family situation? Do you have any pets?
I have a hubby and an almost-three-year old son. I also have two cats and a fish tank.

11. Do you wear scarves, hats, mittens or ponchos?
I love scarves, hats and mittens.

12. What is/are your favorite item/s to knit?
Almost anything!

13. What are you knitting right now?
I always have several WIPs. I am knitting some baby items for my friends, and a pair of socks and shrug for myself.

14. Do you like to receive handmade gifts?
Yes, definitely.

15. Do you prefer straight or circular needles? Bamboo, aluminum, plastic?
Circulars. I love my Knitpicks Options sets.

16. Do you own a yarn winder and/or swift?
Both.

17. How old is your oldest UFO?
I don't even know! I have several very old UFOs that should be frogged. I hate frogging!

18. What is your favorite holiday?
Definitely Christmas.

19. Is there anything that you collect?
Yarn, I guess. I love books and have a big library. I also love everything related to cats.

20. Any books, yarns, needles or patterns out there you are dying to get your hands on? What knitting magazine subscriptions do you have?
I subscribe to IK and Vogue Knitting. I love all kinds of craft books and never seem to get enough of them!

21. Are there any new techniques you'd like to learn?
Loom knitting and spinning.

22. Are you a sock knitter? What are your foot measurements?
Yes, I am. I have small feet, I wear US size 5 or 6 (European 36-37), and the length of my foot from heel to the big toe is 8 5/8 inches (22 cm). Foot circumference is the same as the length.

23. When is your birthday?
January 20.

24. Are you on Ravelry? If so, what's your ID?
hasbu

Frog Princess

Viimeinen ilta kotona ennen Portlandin matkaa. Tavarat pakkaamatta. Olin alunperin ajattelut ottaa työn alle jonkin Cookie A:n ohjeista, mutta en sitten lähtöhässäkässä löytänyt sopivaa lankaa.

It was the last night before I was leaving for Portland. Things unpacked, naturally. My son is still awake even though it is way past his bedtime. When I finally get him to sleep, I pack my bags in hurry and try to find a sock project to take on the plane. I had originally though about one of Cookie A's designs, but could not find any suitable yarns in my huge stash.

It was getting very late, so I gave up on the Cookie A pattern and threw some Villamokka sock yarn and a pattern by the Yarn Ball Boogie in my carry on luggage.

Ensimmäinen sukka valmistui menolennon aikana, toisen aloitin paluulennolla. Sitten projekti vaipui unholaan.

I finished the first sock on the flight to Portland, and started the other one the way back. The poor second sock did not get finished. Early this week I realized that the second sock was almost ready and it did not take much to get it finished.

 Seize Diamondbacks

I have very small and narrow feet, so I made the heel flap shorter, picked up 13 stitches along the heel flap sides and decreased 16 stitches on both sides of the gusset.

Sukka ei ole mitenkään erityinen etupuolelta...

Viewed from this angle, the socks do not look like anything special...

 Seize Diamondbacks

Mutta takapuolella on yllätys!

But when you walk away from somebody, this is what they see at the bottom of your legs!

Villamokan Mokkasukka on tosi kivaa lankaa, etenkin tällaisenä lähes yksivärisenä.

Villamokka's yarn Mokkasukka is awesome, I especially like her semi-solid tones.

Mother's Scarf

Kun lähdimme Kreikkaan, nappasin mukaan Salaisen Neuleystäväni lähettämän Sivillan. Sainkin siitä aikaiseksi pätkän Ene's Scarfia.

When we left for Greece earlier this spring, I packed the silk-wool blend my Finnish Secret Pal sent me. I got started with Ene's Scarf.

Ene's Scarf

After the trip, I forgot all about the shawl. I picked it up again couple of weeks ago. Then I realized that I was going to run out of the yarn. It took me a week before I got around to ordering some more.

Ene's Scarf

Lisää lankaa sain perjantaina ja tikuttelin huivin loppuun.

The yarn arrived on Friday and I finally finished the shawl.

Ene's Scarf

Käsialani on melkoisen löysä, joten normaalisti hyppään enemminkin suosituksia pienemmään kokoon. Huivista tuli iso!

I wanted the make the shawl light and drapey and knit it with fairly large needles. I knit loosely and normally use smaller needles than specified in patterns. This shawl is big!

Ene's Scarf

Onnea, äiti! Toivottavasti huiville on käyttöä!

Happy birthday, mama! I hope you like it!

Ene's Scarf

Malli: Ene's Scarf, kirjasta Scarf Style
Lanka: Wetterhoff Sivilla (70 % villa, 30 % silkki), 153 g
Puikot: 4.5 mm

Pattern: Ene's Scarf from Scarf Style

SNY:n paketti on postissa odottamassa.

It seems that all my friends are having babies this year. When my son was born nearly three years ago, I hardly knew anybody who used cloth diapers; almost all my friends used disposable ones. I was the odd one out in our group of friends. However, now I am delighted to see many of my friends using cloth diapers and happily knitting wool soakers for them. Friends: If you want a pair, just ask. I will be happy to knit you some!

Nämä kaksi menee miehen serkun pienelle pojalle. Toivottavasti ovat mieluisat. Ohje on tosi hyvä, suosittelen!

These were knitted for DH's cousin's little boy. I hope he and his mama like them! I really like the pattern, unfortunately there seems to be no English translation available.

Soakers

Puikot: 5 mm
